Overview

Experience one of the most exciting adventures in Argentine Patagonia with a Minitrekking excursion on the Perito Moreno Glacier, combining navigation, natural trails, glacier hiking and panoramic views.

The experience begins with pick-up from your hotel in El Calafate and transportation toward Los Glaciares National Park. Upon arrival at Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, located approximately 70 km from El Calafate, you will board a boat for a 20-minute navigation across Lake Rico.

After disembarking, professional mountain guides will lead you along the lakeshore toward the glacier. Before stepping onto the ice, you will receive crampons, helmets and a safety briefing. The glacier hike is considered moderately difficult and takes place on an irregular but firm surface.

At the end of the glacier walk, you will enjoy a traditional whisky toast with glacier ice. Afterwards, the experience continues with a visit to the refuge, return navigation and approximately 1 hour at the Perito Moreno walkways before returning to El Calafate.

Itinerary

Day 1: PERITO MORENO MINITREKKING FULL DAY

08:00 AM: Pick-up from your hotel in El Calafate and departure toward Los Glaciares National Park accompanied by a professional guide.
09:30 AM: Arrival at Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, located approximately 70 km from El Calafate, and preparation for the navigation.
10:00 AM – 10:20 AM: Enjoy approximately 20 minutes of navigation across Lake Rico, approaching the southern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
10:20 AM: Disembark and meet the professional mountain guides who will accompany the group during the trekking experience.
10:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Walk along natural trails and the lakeshore toward the glacier, enjoying panoramic views of the southern face.
11:00 AM: Arrival at the edge of the glacier. The guides will provide crampons and helmets, followed by a safety briefing and instructions for walking on the ice.
11:30 AM – 01:30 PM: Begin the Minitrekking experience on the Perito Moreno Glacier, walking across the ice and discovering its formations, crevasses and characteristic Patagonian scenery.
01:30 PM: End of the glacier walk and traditional whisky toast with glacier ice.
02:00 PM: Return to the refuge area, where passengers can enjoy a hot drink and receive a souvenir.
02:30 PM – 02:50 PM: Board the boat and navigate back across Lake Rico toward Puerto Bajo de las Sombras.
03:15 PM – 04:15 PM: Visit the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways for approximately 1 hour, enjoying panoramic views of the glacier from different balconies.
04:15 PM: Begin the return journey toward El Calafate.
05:00 PM approximately: Arrival in El Calafate and transfer back to your hotel.

15 Days In-Depth Tour of Peru

The tour was good but not very suitable for elderly travelers because of the early wake-up times.

The long bus trip from Nazca to Arequipa was especially tough. We left Nazca at 4 PM and arrived in Arequipa around 2:30 AM.

Tour guide Tatiana and all drivers did a very good job.
