Puerto Varas is a lakeside town on the southern shore of Lago Llanquihue in Chile’s Lake District. The main views are of the lake itself and the symmetrical cone of Volcán Osorno across the water. Most visitors use the town as a base for short drives into the surrounding countryside rather than spending long periods in the center.
Waterfront and Town
The costanera along the lake is the simplest walk in town. It takes about 30 minutes end to end and gives open views toward Osorno and Calbuco. The center is small, with a mix of wooden buildings that reflect the area’s German settler history, a couple of churches, and cafés. One or two hours is usually enough to see the main streets.

Petrohué Falls and Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park
The Saltos de Petrohué are the most common day trip. The river drops through channels in black volcanic rock, creating a series of rapids with emerald water and Osorno in the background. The falls sit inside Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile’s oldest national park. Boardwalks and short trails make the site accessible without long hiking. It is roughly an hour’s drive from Puerto Varas.
Nearby, Lago Todos los Santos offers boat options and further views of the volcanoes. The park also has longer trails on the lower slopes of Osorno for those who want more walking.

Osorno Volcano
Osorno dominates the skyline. In summer, roads and lifts give access to viewpoints and short walks on the lower slopes. In winter (roughly June to September or October), the ski area on the volcano operates. Guided summit attempts are available for fit visitors outside the main ski season, but most people stay lower and treat the volcano as a scenic backdrop or short outing.

Timing and Stay Length
The main season for lakes and outdoor activities runs from roughly October to April. December to February is the busiest and warmest period. Rain is possible year-round in this part of Chile, so waterproof layers are useful even in summer. Three nights is a practical minimum if you want the falls and at least one other outing; longer stays suit those who prefer a slower pace or want to add nearby towns such as Frutillar.
Useful Information
- A car or organized transfers make the falls and volcano easier to reach; public transport covers some routes but with less flexibility.
- Weather around the volcano can differ from conditions in town.
- The lake water is cold even in summer.
- Book accommodation ahead in December – February.
Connecting with Other Places
Puerto Varas sits between Puerto Montt (the main transport hub with the airport) and destinations farther south along the Carretera Austral or across to Bariloche via the lakes. It is distinct from the more urban stops in central Chile. If you are also visiting Santiago, our guide to Santiago neighborhoods covers the main areas in the capital.
