Huacachina Oasis: Dune Buggies, Sandboarding and Practical Advice

Huacachina is a small natural lagoon surrounded by tall sand dunes, about 5 km from the city of Ica. Most visitors come for the dune buggy rides and sandboarding rather than to spend long periods around the lagoon itself.

The oasis is low and dry. Strong sun and wind-blown sand are the main practical considerations.

Getting There

Public buses from Lima or Paracas usually stop in Ica, not inside the oasis. From Ica’s terminal it is a short taxi ride (around 15–20 minutes) to Huacachina. Some tourist-oriented services can drop passengers directly at the lagoon.

The most common combinations are a day trip from Lima or a stop while traveling between Paracas and Nazca or Arequipa. Overnight stays are possible but not necessary for most people.

Dune Buggies and Sandboarding

The main activity is a 1.5- to 2-hour buggy tour that includes several sandboarding runs. Operators leave from the edge of the lagoon. Late afternoon departures are preferred because temperatures are lower and the light is better for photos, especially near sunset.

Safety varies between operators. Look for vehicles with functioning seat belts and roll cages, and confirm the length of the tour before booking. Very cheap, informal options sometimes cut corners.

Sandboarding can be done standing or lying down. Most first-timers choose the lying-down option on steeper dunes. Equipment is normally provided by the operator.

Timing and Conditions

Huacachina can be visited year-round. The coastal desert climate means little rain. Midday sun is intense, especially from December to March. May to September tends to feel more comfortable for outdoor activity.

Late afternoon remains the better window for the dunes regardless of the month. Mornings are quieter around the lagoon but less ideal for the classic buggy experience.

Practical Notes

  • Bring strong sun protection, a light scarf or buff for sand, and closed shoes.
  • Cash is useful; card acceptance is limited.
  • One night is enough if you want to do the dunes without rushing. Many travelers manage it as part of a longer coastal day.
  • The lagoon itself is small. Most of the time is spent on the dunes rather than walking around the water.

Combining with Nearby Places

Huacachina pairs easily with Paracas (Ballestas Islands) on the same day or with a stop in Ica for pisco tasting. Travelers continuing south often link it with a Nazca Lines flight. Our Paracas and Ballestas Islands guide and Nazca Lines flight guide cover the usual connections.
